Age of Aquinas Events of 2007:

• Saturday, December 29, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  For a cloudy, cold, rain-threatening morning, we had an incredible turn-out!  I guess folks believe me when I say we’ll hike regardless of the weather.  Never has one of these hikes been rained out.It knows better than to rain on us, anyway!  Eighteen people set out with us.  We walked and talked in twos, threes, and fours around the lake this time.  One of our number brought her Christmas present along (given by another of our number): a Bird-Spotting Diary!  She wrote down (in the back on the Dec 29 page) that we saw: several Willets, a Bufflehead, a few Surf Scoters, a Canvasback, and (we think) a Lesser Scaup, plus the usual Western Gulls, Canada Geese, and Coots.  The highlight of the walk was a Northern Kestrel on the back side of the lake!  Now it’s documented for all time!  We hope you have a really exceptional New Year Holiday, and don’t let anyone “disconvince” you of its potential!  See you all next Saturday!
  
  
• Saturday, December 22, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  Today was the first official First Day of Winter, the Winter Solstice, when the Sun's highest point in the sky is the lowest of the year, and the day itself is the shortest.  Well, blue and white are colors we can associate with Winter, and those colors were in abundance today... in the sky and the lake, but there was an abundance of green as well.  After all, this is Northern California where even the "dead of winter" is pleasant.  There must have been 18 who set out on the 2-mile walk, but we were joined soon by more.  And back at the Café, we discovered there were even more who walked, and a few who just came for the coffee and/or breakfast.  The final total was... who knows?  The fun and camaraderie are more important than the numbers.  Here's wishing you all, whether walkers or not, coffee-drinkers or not, the merriest of Christmases, and the happiest of New Years.  May God bless us every one!
  
  
• Saturday, December 15, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  Never assume you know what the weather will be like on the hike by looking out your window at home... unless you live down the street from Shoreline Park!  The view from my window this morning showed a leaden sky and it looked cold.  But by the time 12 of us set out on our walk, the sun was shining brightly and it was warming rapidly.  The faces of all the walkers were shining brightly and warmly too.  There was conversation and laughter, and back at the café, good coffee and food.  And our number grew by half again as more smiling faces joined the group.  Make sure yours is there next week!

• Saturday, December 8, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  About 17 of us set out on the walk this morning.  Some stepped out briskly, some sauntered, some merely strolled, and there may have been a few who only shuffled.  This is a walk for everybody.  Age of Aquinas, while officially "a group for Christian singles 40+", never "cards" anyone.  There was one walker who is not single, and another who brought his son and daughter along.  I'm sure the kids are single, but I'll guarantee you they're not 40!  By the time we were sitting down at the café, our number had grown to about 24 (then shrank again gradually as those with places to go and people to see took their leave).  There was some discussion about a description for our hiking group.  A Catholic started it, some Presbyterians show up every week, a Jew or two have joined us occasionally, and at least one regular isn't religious at all.  Thus the word pretty much agreed on to describe us is "eclectic".  No matter who you are, you'll fit in!  So we'll see you next week, right?
  
  
• Saturday, December 1, 2007, 5:00 pm: Christmas Dance and Potluck Sponsored by Calvary Ballroom Dance Ministry.  Singles and couples, young and old, dance to the music of the Sons of Jubal, a 17-piece band.  Dress nice casual to slightly dressy.  (Ladies avoid high heels, except dance shoes; men avoid shoes that make black marks.  Thanks for helping protect the beauty of the hardwood dance floor!)

• Saturday, December 1, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  The words of a Rascals song came to mind as hikers gathered at the staging area this morning.  "It's a beautiful morning, ahhhh!  I think I'll go outside for a while, and just smile".  Twelve of us set out, quickly joined by a 13th.  "If the weather's fine and you got the time, it's your chance to wake up and plan another brand new day."  According to one hiker's recording GPS we walked 2 miles 480 feet, winding around the trails among the trees and birds before we returned to the café.  There 8 more joined us and we chatted, sipped and ate.  "It just ain't no good if the sun shines, and you're still in side!"  So join the group next Saturday... even if the sun doesn't shine!
  
  
• Saturday, November 24, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  My powers of remembering names were severely taxed this morning as somewhere between a half dozen and a dozen first-timers joined us.  And even more joined along the walk!  There were so many people, we had to double-up on a few names.  (There were 2 Jans, 2 Rons, 2 Carols, 2 Larrys, and a Wally and a Walt.) ... (I think...).  The total before coffee, as near as I can recall, was 30.  And at least 4 more were waiting for us at the café.  We just about filled up all the umbrella tables!  New acquaintances were made and new upcoming events were shared.  This is a great group and getting "greater"!
  
  
• November 22, 2007 Age of Aquinas Thanksgiving Dining Out.  Age of Aquinas joined with the SF Catholic Alumni Club for Thanksgiving!  Fifteen of us who didn't have a place to gather with family or other friends for Thanksgiving, got together for the Annual Age of Aquinas Thanksgiving Dining Out, and we had our own Thanksgiving at David's Restaurant in Santa Clara.  This year CAC joined us in cosponsoring this event.  It was a great way to celebrate friendship and give thanks for all our many blessings.

• Saturday, November 17, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  When we set out on our walk this morning, yours truly was the "only rooster in the henhouse", as it were.  But that didn't last long.  At least two more roosters caught up with us.  We did split up at a crossroads.  Some of us took a short cut back to the café, and some of us made a real hike out of it.  Eventually, we all rendezvoused at the café and had coffee, tea, or a meal.  By that time there were nearly two dozen of us.  It's a great way to start off the weekend.  Join us next time!
  
  
• Saturday, November 10, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  It was a beautiful morning for walking, and 14 of us, including a first-timer and a couple of first-time-in-a-long-timers, headed out along the lake.  Everybody had a conversation partner if they wanted one, which made the exercise seem light.  Back at the café at least 3 more joined us and the conversation continued.  Thanksgiving is coming up and if you don't have anywhere else to go, come dine with us at the 3rd Annual Thanksgiving Dining Out on Thanksgiving Day.  See you next Saturday!
  
  
• Saturday, November 3, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  We had some more first-timers this morning, and some more first-time-in-a-long-timers.  We set off at a brisk pace a few minutes after 9 and soon many of us found we had dressed too warmly!  The geese and the coots prob'ly wondered what was chasing that herd of humans down the path.  It was a simply beautiful, bright, sunny morning, and 2 "hitch" hikers joined us along the way.  Then back at the café even more joined our party.  And it was a party!  Don't miss the next one.
  
  
• Friday, November 2, 2007 Ballroom Dance Night Out.  This was a relaxed place with tables and chairs, sofas and a soda bar.  Good for mingling and dancing.  People brought something to share - a snack, beverage (non-alcoholic) or dessert.  We got to know each other over munchies and dancing in an uncrowded, intimate setting.  Singles from other area churches were also invited.  Everyone made new friends!

• Saturday, October 20, 2007 was the latest Age of Aquinas dance!  Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31st by the young at heart who, in a tradition commonly known as trick-or-treating, dress in costumes and go door-to-door to collect sweets, fruits, and other gifts.  Other traditional activities include costume parties, viewing horror films, visiting haunted houses, participating in traditional autumn activities such as hayrides (which may have "haunted" themes), and attending costume dances on October 20!!!  We dressed up in our favorite costumes and joined our friends and our favorite band, The Sharp Nines, for the best costume dance around.
  Doors open: 8:00.  The band start playing about 8:30.  Snacks and beverages were provided.

• Saturday, October 20, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  There's an atmospheric phenomenon called an undular bore where parallel waves of clouds roll across the sky, (see http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2007/11oct_undularbore.htm?list72795).  Well this week we had about 4 waves of walkers.  The first one started out a few minutes after nine.  We encountered the second wave at a junction of paths.  Then some of that group turned around at about the half-way point and on the way back met the third wave.  The fourth wave did its own thing.  Eventually we all wound up back at the café, 22 of us.  We ate, drank, talked, exchanged stories and information, and gradually left in waves, as well.  We can do it all again next Saturday.  And don't forget the dance tonight at St. Albert the Great, 1095 Channing, Palo Alto, starting at 8pm.  See you all soon!
  
  
• Saturday, October 13, 2007: 7:00 pm till about 10 pm.  The next Age of Aquinas Star Party is happening!  Set a course... for the stars! Voyage with your Age of Aquinas friends to the next Star Party. Bring your telescope and/or binoculars (if you have them) and a picnic dinner. While the sun sets and twilight deepens, we'll have our picnic and get our telescopes set up. Dress warmly in layers. Clear nights can get chilly.
  Admission: FREE!!
  Location: Meet at the Park'n'Ride at I-280 and Page Mill Rd west of Palo Alto at 7:00pm. From there we'll carpool to Foothill Park. Anyone with a telescope aboard gets in free and does not need to be a Palo Alto resident. Just tell them at the gate that you are an amateur astronomer participating in the public star party. We will be joining the Peninsula Astronomical Society for this month's fall star party.

• Saturday, October 13, 2007 A talented cast of diverse characters will come alive at the Renaissance Faire once again this year.  There'll be gossiping washerwomen, bellowing town criers, mischievous fools, and swashbuckling sword fighters filling the streets with color and merriment and bringing the Renaissance village to magical life.  The festivities start at 10am and Casa de Fruta is about an hour or so from Palo Alto.  We'll carpool!

• Saturday, September 22, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  It was the first rainy morning of the season and a dozen walkers were there by 9:05 with hoods and umbrellas to prove that we really do go hiking regardless of temperature, sky condition, or precipitation state.  And as a matter of fact, the gentle rain fell the entire time.  And we all had a great time.  A couple of "hitch" hikers joined us partway through the hike and a few split off early to head back to the café.  Yours truly will be out of touch for the next three Saturdays, but the hikes will always go on.
  
  
• Monday, September 17, 2007, 7:30 pm: Dean Lecture Series of the California Academy of Sciences.  Astronomers and space scientists discuss their work in terms not requiring a background in science.  Ryan Wyatt, Director of Morrison Planetarium and Science Visualization, California Academy of Sciences, will speak on: "A Brief Tour Of The Universe".
  Cost: Tickets are $4.00 at the door.  Parking is across the street for $1.25/night or in the JCC garage for $1.25/half-hour.  We'll carpool!

• Saturday, September 15, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  It was a morning that evoked memories (in yours truly) of some songs from grade school.  "Shine glorious sun! / Chase the gloom of night away. / Set thy radiance in heaven / to greet the day."  I don't remember the composer, nor can I find those words on the web.  If any of you remember it, drop me a line.  We had about a dozen there at 9:05 when we set out.  We walked for 45+ minutes and joined 3 or 4 more at the café for coffee.  Don't miss it next week!
  
  
• Friday, September 14, 2007: MORE FREE Shakespeare!.  Macbeth, directed by Karen de Leon, took us inside the mind and soul of one of literature's most notorious villains.  Macbeth is a man trapped in a nightmare he can neither control, nor escape.  Set in a world where women reign, men fight, and witchcraft decides one's fate, this production rocked our expectations of this classic play and left us wondering how far we would go...
  Admission: FREE!!  Parking was $6.00.  We got in touch with Kathy for carpool information.
  Location: About half a dozen Age of Aquinas friends rendezvoused at Sanborn-Skyline County Park, Saratoga, 16055 Sanborn Rd., Saratoga, 95070.  We got there by about 6:00 got good parking spots, then we followed the flags to the seating area.  The red balloons came down about 7 as the play was about to begin.
  CARPOOL INFO: We met at the home of Carol Wirth, 408.871.1269 to carpool to Sanborn Park, 608 Harrison Ave, Campbell, CA 95008.  We got there no later than 5:30.  Kathy Gannon saved seats at the park until 6:00 pm, so could'nt be late!  The play started at 7.

• Saturday, September 8, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  We had a fantastic, if short, walk this morning.  The smoke from the central valley forest fires seemed to be thinking about dissipating and blue sky was peeking through the morning fog.  About a baker's dozen of us started off just a few minutes after 9 am.  And then we picked up 4 or 5 more "hitch" hikers along the way.  Back at the café we got acquainted with 4 first-timers.  One or 2 more "old" timers joined us.  And we all had a great yak session!  Join us next Saturday!
  
  
• Saturday, September 1, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  It was another Northern California beautiful day and our group of hikers set out together and quickly spread out.  Some took up a brisk space, some a leisurely stroll.  We wound around the paths until one group split off to go see if they could spot the burrowing owl.  (They did!)  Conversations included topics of the dance last night, the meteor shower early in the pre-dawn morning, and of a hundred other things from rush hour traffic to the history of these hikes.  Come to the next one for some tromping, talking, and tipping of coffee cups at the café afterwards.
  
  
• Friday, August 31, 2007: 8 pm to midnight.  It was a Baby Boomers Bash  America's largest demographic group, almost 80 million Baby Boomers, were honored that night!  Baby Boomers were born between 1946 and 1964, currently make up 25% of the population, control 37% of the wealth, and enjoy reliving the best times of their lives and indulging in nostalgia.  So… if you're a Baby Boomer, you came along and danced to your favorite hits from the fifties, sixties and seventies!.  Co-sponsored by the Society of Single Professionals and Singles Supper Club!
  Cost: $20/door includes hors d'oeuvres first hour.  Dressy attire, please!

• Saturday, August 25, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  We were a group of seven when we set out.  Two joined us quickly, and one more caught up with us later.  We wound our way three times back and forth along the strip of land between the lake and the sloughs.  Another was waiting for us at the café.  It was Ron, in his "boot", the soft cast enwrapping his right leg.  It was this development that scrapped the Embarcadero Walk originally scheduled for this Sunday.  Which means you're free to come to the Planning Meeting Potluck at my house Sunday at 6:30.  Call 408.739.2881 for directions and what to bring.
  
  
• Wednesday, August 22, 2007, 5:00 pm: San Jose Giants Ballgame with FIREWORKS!.  Take yourself out to the ballgame!  The San Jose Giants ("Little Giants") are playing the Visalia Oaks and after the game there will be FIREWORKS!  We will gather in the picnic area along the 3rd base line before the game.  Turkey Mike's BBQ has great fare (eg BBQ Tri-tip for about $10... enough for 2 at least)!  If we get there early enough, we can save seats in the stands and sit together.

• Saturday, August 18, 2007: 7:00 pm till about 10 pm.  The latest Age of Aquinas Star Party happened!  We saw what's out there, including the Moon and the planet Jupiter, double stars, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies!  We met at the Park 'n' Ride at I-280 and Page Mill Rd in Los Altos at 7:00 and carpooled to Foothill Park.  We brought telescopes, binoculars, lawn chairs, star maps, planispheres, etc. and had a picnic while twilight deepened.  Seven A-of-A-ers attended along with several Peninsula Astronomical Society members, and scores of visitors.  The next star party is September 18, so mark your calendars.  Contact Randy Jones, 408.739.2881 for more information.
  
  
• Saturday, August 18, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  It was almost of repeat of last week.  Certainly the perfect weather was a repeat.  Eleven of us headed out about 9:05 and two more hurried to catch up.  This time we headed east toward the burrowing owl mound.  There were several photographers within about 20 yards of the owl who stood stock still and eyed the oglers (us included).  After that pause we continued on the path along the salt evaporation ponds almost to Stevens Creek where we turned around and went back.  A couple more joined us at the café, where ensued conversation, camaraderie, and coffee!

Saturday, August 11, 2007 It was a summer full of peace and love... of flower children, rock stars, and gurus... all celebrating the new psychedelic consciousness.  The center for this new consciousness in 1967 was the intersection of Haight and Ashbury Streets near San Francisco's idyllic Golden Gate Park.  In 2007, the center moved to Palo Alto for the evening! We dug out our hippy beads, headbands, and tied-died shirts, let our hair hang down, and joined our friends and our favorite band, The Sharp Nines, at the... • Saturday, August 11, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  Thirteen of us headed out about 9:05 and two more hurried to catch up.  We walked along the lake and turned left to circumnavigate the lake and the back nine of the golf course.  On that leg of the trip we shared the road briefly with a giant semi truck!  Crossing the bridge between Michael's Restaurant and the Rengstorff House we spied a Great Egret.  Don't see those too often.  We ogled it until it flew away.  Three more joined the group for coffee at the Café.

• Saturday, August 4, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  We were a little late getting started this time, but there were 14 in the initial group and 2 more caught up with us.  Now we all know about the flock of birds (Canada geese) that lives at Shoreline.  Well, this morning there was also a flock of birders, with their binoculars, spotting scopes, tripods, cameras, bird books, etc.  The set about 10 minutes ahead of us.  Back at the "ranch" about 3 more joined us which brought our total to 20.
  
  
• Saturday, July 28, 2007: FREE Shakespeare in the Park!.  Your Age of Aquinas friends gathered at: Memorial Park Amphitheater, Stevens Creek Blvd at Mary, Cupertino, 95014, at 7:30 for an enchanting evening and a Midsummer Night's Dream!  The play started at 7:30pm, but people aimed to arrive by 6:30 to get a seat and parking at a reasonable distance.  They brought a picnic dinner to eat before the show, and low beach chairs or blankets to sit on.  Dressing in layers was appropriate because it got cooler as the evening advanced.  The red balloons marked the location of our group.  For more information, contact Randy Jones, 408.739.2881.
  
  
• Saturday, July 28, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  We had 12 hikers when we started out just a little after 9, but 5 more caught up with us soon.  You see, we had stopped to behold an unusual sight.  An 8-in diameter turtle was out in the middle of a grassy area.  He didn't look like he belonged there, and after consulting each other, we decided to carry him down closer to the lakeshore.  Yours truly was elected to do the honors, but the turtle voted against the plan!  Nevertheless, he got carried back to within a couple feet of the mud along the edge of the water.  We hope he was happier there, once he was no longer "flying" 3+ feet above the ground.

• Saturday, July 21, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  There were nine who started out.  The two in front led the group on the longest hike ever!  All got back to the cafe at 10:15, where three people were still waiting, though one had showed up and left already.  Yours truly was still on his way back from Arizona this time but will be back hiking next week.  See you then!
  
  
• Saturday, July 14, 2007: 7:00 pm till about 10 pm.  The latest Age of Aquinas Star Party took place!  To seek out new sights and new revelations, to boldly go where few have gone before, all you had to do was come to the Star Party!  We met at the Park 'n' Ride at I-280 and Page Mill Rd in Los Altos at 7:00.  We brought picnic lunches, telescopes, binoculars, lawn chairs, star maps, planispheres, etc.  Contact Randy Jones, 408.739.2881 for more information.
  
  
• Saturday, July 14, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  Ten hikers set out at 9:05 am today, including at least one octogenarian!  Most headed toward the Palo Alto Baylands and back.  I and the octogenarian took our time strolling around the lake and back to the café.  I don't know about the rest, but I spotted a Willet and a Greater Yellowlegs.  These two shore birds can be mistaken for each other until you notice the color of their legs!  The Willet's legs are grey.

• Saturday, July 7, 2007: Movie Matinee: Sicko.  "This might hurt a little!"  So claims the trailer to Michael Moore's new movie.  The movie started at 12:45.  Admission was $7.50.  A group met at 12:15 pm on the left side of the main door to the Century 16 Theaters, 1500 N. • Saturday, July 7, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  It was another of those achingly beautiful California mornings.  Eleven people including a couple of first-timers set out at about 9:05 along the lake.  We saw Snowy Egrets and Forster's Terns, and of course the ever-present Canada Geese and Coots.  Four or five more joined the group at coffee about an hour later where we learned that a delegation of us was planning on going to see Sicko at midday at the Century 16 theaters down the road.  Next Saturday is another morning hike and and the next evening star party.  See the "This Week" section above for details.  See you soon!
  
  
• Saturday, June 30, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  Yours truly was not there, but 9 of you were!  You circled the lake counterclockwise and while most of you then headed back to the café, some went on for another 15 or 20 minutes.  Three more were there for coffee.  As always, you get to walk at your own pace for as long as you want, and don't even need to walk at all to enjoy the camaraderie after.  See you next week!

• Saturday, June 23, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  For it being the first Saturday of Summer, the number of hikers was low.  But 8 of us set out to enjoy the morning air and get some exercise.  As usual, the Canada geese were everywhere, moving a lot slower than we were.  Our route was a pretzel and took us at least once onto every path in the part of the park between the lake and the sloughs.  Then about 5 more folks joined us at the café afterwards.  A couple of those arrived after we had left for our walk.  We aim to start walking at 9:00 am sharp!  Don't be late!

• Saturday, June 9, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  Ten of us set out this morning under a beautiful blue sky.  We walked straight up the hill to the path by the sloughs, all along the way noticing that the once tiny, fluffy baby geese were growing up... prob'ly about the equivalent of teenagers now.  Our hearts went out to those parents, as will the heart of anyone who's raised a teenager.  Canada geese weren't the only adolescents in the park.  We also spied a mother black-necked stilt trying to keep up with her two teenagers.  As last week, one contingent of walkers went on over to the Palo Alto Baylands, while the rest of us headed back.  Three or four more joined us at the café afterward for coffee and breakfast.  Maybe we'll see you next Saturday!
  
  
• Saturdays & Sundays March 10 through June 10, 2007 Friends of Edgewood sponsored a series of docent-led Wildflower Hikes in Edgewood Park, Redwood City.  Every Saturday and Sunday from March 10 to June 10, 2007.  Walks began at 10:00 am and ended around 1:00 pm.  See the flyer for details.

• Saturday, June 2, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  Eleven walkers set out at 9:05 under another soft gray blanket of clouds.  The morning was just like every other one this week... overcast, but with a promise of sunshine later on.  We started off clockwise around the back nine of the golf course this time.  Then at the end of the lake, we split.  Half came back along the lake.  The other half turned left and went over to the Baylands.  As always, these walks are as long or as short as you want.  And if you oversleep, you can still meet for coffee at the café as did four or five this morning.  Tomorrow (Sunday) is the musical Hair on Mt. • Wednesday, May 23, 2007, 7:00 pm is the next Astronomy Lecture in the Silicon Valley Lecture Series.  Some of us are meeting at 5:45 at the Pasta Market Italian Restaurant, 4546 El Camino Real, Los Altos, for dinner, but you can also meet us at 6:30 (under the tall time/temp sign) to carpool up to the college.  The lecture this time is titled: A Ringside Seat to the Birth of Planets.  If you're interested in coming, please let Carrie know by email.  The lecture is free.  Parking at Foothill College is $2.00 (bring 8 quarters!).

• Saturday, May 19, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  It gave a superficial impression of an overcast sky this morning, but it was really just a layer of fog well above ground level that was rapidly breaking up and letting the sunshine in.  Eight of us set out and quickly stretched out.  Each group walked at their own pace, some taking more time to stop and smell the mud flats than others!  The tide was out and food foraging was in progress among the shore birds.  An island of green 50 yards across the mud looked like a nursery for American Avocet families.  Back at the café two more joined us, and one brought lemon cake "stars" to share!  Ymmm!
  
  
• Saturday, May 12, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  Well, we didn't set out at 9 am this morning!  The Human Race got in there and delayed things.  It's an annual event, and if you're interested in being more than inconvenienced by it, check out: the Human Race website.  Eleven of us were patient enough to get into the park by the (revised) departure time of 9:15 (don't get used to that! We're going to try to depart on time at 9 next week!).  Two or three more rendezvoused with us for coffee at the café.  A previously unidentified species of bird that graced us was a walk-on (or fly-on) by a Forster's Tern who kept cruising above the shoreline of the lake looking for breakfast.

• Saturday, May 5, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  The sky was crystal clear, the sun was bright and warm, the air was crisp and fresh... in other words it was just another run-of-the-mill day at Shoreline Park.  Thirteen of us took off on our walk and about 3 others encountered us on the trails.  If you want to walk with the group, and be there for the introductions, try to make it by 9 am!  The grounds were teeming with Canada Geese parents and their babies...

• Saturday, April 28, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  It was a beautiful day, and the REI kayakers were out too.  But there was still plenty of room to park, and plenty of room to walk.  Thirteen hikers took off, clockwise this time, around the lake.  And four more joined the group at coffee.  On the backside of the golf course we spotted a House Finch and an Anna's Hummingbird.  A Snowy Egret and a Willet dodged Canada Geese along the water.  And it was Gosling's Day on the grass.  Scores of baby geese were being watched and herded by their parents.  Exercise your sense of wonder next Saturday morning... and don't forget the dance next Saturday night!

• Saturday, April 21, 2007, 7:00 - 10:00 pm.  It's National Astronomy Day and Foothill College Observatory's Grand Re-Opening!  Five of us rendezvoused under the time and temperature sign at the corner of El Camino Real and San Antonio Rd in Los Altos at 7pm and carpooled/convoyed to Foothill College Observatory.  The night wasn't clear, in fact it was raining, but we kept our heads and our spirits dry.  The new telescope is a beautiful instrument and the computer and software that contol it are wonders to behold!
  
  
• Saturday, April 21, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  It seems as though only the hardiest walkers were ready to brave the cool and the grey of the morning.  It was chilly and the sky and the water were grey.  Still, seven people showed and all were ready to walk.  The first thing we noticed was that numerous Canada Goose families had had goslings.  Several mom and dad pairs were herding their kids around the grass.  The small, fluffy youngsters were curious and adventurous, but mostly well-behaved.  The other thing we saw was a Snowy Egret picking out his breakfast by the edge of the water.  Three folks were waiting for us when we returned to the café, and two more joined us as we were having our coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.  If you want to start next weekend off with an invigorating walk, join us next Saturday, same time, same place.
  
  
• Saturday, April 14, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  Yours truly did not make the hike this time as he was walking in Arts Walk Santa Clara to raise money for the Sunnyvale Singers.  But the hike, in spite of some rain, went on as scheduled.  Nine people set out, joined by one "hitch"-hiker on the way.  Back at the café after a somewhat watered-down walk, four more less rain-braving (smarter?) souls joined the group for coffee and conversation.  There were at least two first-timers.  Don't miss out!  Join us next Saturday, rain or shine!
  
  
• Saturday, April 7, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  The shaded greys of the sky made a nice contrast to the textured green of the foliage this morning.  Seventeen hikers started out and as if in appreciation, a large blue clearing appeared above us and the sun shone down.  By the time we made it back to the café, the clouds had lovingly covered us again.  By that time we were nineteen in number.  There were some new sights to see and sounds to hear.  A Bullock's Oriole, resplendent in his orange and black plumage sang to us from a tree top.  A blue-grey Great Blue Heron soared by overhead.  With a flash a white, a dark-grey Northern Mockingbird shot across our path.  And a timid Anna's Hummingbird watched us as we passed his tree.

• Saturday, March 31, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  At 8:45 this morning, the gathering place was empty, but people began arriving and by about 9:00 it was teeming with 18 people ready to go walking.  We had several first-timers and we spent the first few minutes getting acquainted and trying to remember names.

  Then we set out in an easterly direction along the sloughs.  Among the wildlife we identified were Canada Geese, several Mallards, a Willet, a couple of Anna's Hummingbirds, several Great Egrets, and a few beautiful Red-winged Blackbirds!  About 6 more folks joined us at the café afterwards.  There's always room for 6 more, yes?  See you next time.
  
  
• Saturday, March 24, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  For a short time this morning, the men outnumbered the women, but that changed quickly as more and more hikers arrived.  Then seventeen of us set out around the lake, past the Red-tailed Hawk nest, between the front and back nines of the golf course, and back to the café where four more joined the party.  Along the lake we spied some of our old friends: the ever-present Coots, the rarer Black-necked stilts and Surf Scoters, and one lone Snowy Egret.  The hawk nest was unoccupied, and we hoped Mrs. & Mr. Redtail didn't get caught in an adjustable rate mortgage fiasco.

• Saturday, March 17, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  St. Paddy's Day morning was lazy and sleepy.  The park was snuggled under a soft gray comforter.  It was a good day for sleeping in... but only until about 8 o'clock so you could join the others for a nice walk at 9.  Thirteen started off, joined by a fourteenth on the trail and three more at the café later.  The peace was briefly interrupted by an American Crow who was really upset by the presence of a Northern Harrier.  The harrier was not worried and swooped down to get his breakfast anyway.  The crow was definitely "harried".

• Saturday, March 10, 2007, 8:00 - 11:00 pm.  It really was time for another STAR PARTY!  We brought our telescopes, binoculars, and our curiosity!  Lawn chairs, chaise lounges, and snacks to share, added amenities.  We met in the big parking lot just outside the entrance to Shoreline Park in Mountain View.
  But the real show was above us in the heavens.  Illustrious Orion, beautiful Venus, mysterious Saturn, all gave us a show we won't soon forget.
  
  
• Saturday, March 10, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  It was a very fortunate day for 19 hikers this morning.  We got up close and personal, like within 10 feet, of two magnificent birds.  The first was a stately Great Blue Heron who landed on the path ahead of us.  We stopped and watched for several minutes while he examined us.  Then there was the Northern Harrier perched on a post beside the trail.  She too watched us watch her.

• Saturday, March 3, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  We had a score of walkers and coffee-drinkers at the hike today.  The weather was gorgeous, as usual, and the beauty of nature was all around us.  The hawk couple was there, but not as tied to the nest as in past weeks.  Does that mean the chicks are hatched and food forays are the order of the day now?  Well, next Saturday is a big day.  Not only will there be the regular hike, but in the evening is the star party.  See elsewhere on this page for information.  See you next Saturday.
  
  
• Saturday, February 24, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  There was a hike, but your hike reporter missed it.  As soon as I talk to someone who didn't miss it, I'll fill in some details.  But rest assured, there'll be another hike next Saturday!
  
  
• Saturday, February 17, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  The morning was achingly beautiful... the kind of morning that inspires poetry.  Poetry like that of Edna St. Vincent Millay who declared, "Oh World!  I cannot hold thee close enough!"  There were about 21 of us on the hike and we felt that perhaps God had made the world too beautiful this year!  We again hiked around the lake to the Red-Tailed Hawk nest.  Mr. Hawk and his lady were perched on the trusses of the electrical tower, surveying the world from above as we gazed up from below.  At one point Papa Hawk expressed his love for his lady while we looked on.  There were other beauties and wonders and no less than 5 more people joined the party on the café patio afterwards.  Come on out next Saturday and see if you can hold God's World close enough!
  
  
• Saturday, February 10, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  There's nothing gloomy about a cloudy day at Shoreline Park.  Pale purple blossoms went well with the medium grey sky.  And there were more shades of green than you could count.  Once our group grew to nine umbrella-packing hikers, we took off.  We didn't need the umbrellas except to scare the rain away.  We hiked around the lake to the Red-Tailed Hawk nest we found last week.  We arrived in time to see Papa hawk guard the nest while Mama got some exercise.  She soared and sailed and swooped and circled till she was ready to resume her egg-warming duties.  Farther along we came upon a couple of jack rabbits.  One ran off about 10 yards and then they both watched us carefully.  Were there baby rabbits somewhere in the brush?  We might have to follow up on that next week.  Don't miss it!
  
  
• Saturday, February 3, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  It was a particularly popular gathering place this morning at Lakeside Café.  Twelve people hiked, and three more joined for coffee.  Then three more caught up with us for coffee.  They had been hiking but took a different route than the first dozen.  It was a highly happy and terribly talkative group on the patio!  The first dozen went left around the lake and cut back between the front and back nines of the golf course.  There are fewer shore birds that direction, but they did spot a Red-tailed Hawk nest with Mama sitting in it.  We could only guess that she's keeping some eggs warm, waiting for the blessed events.  We'll follow up next Saturday, so be sure and join us!
  
  
• Saturday, January 27, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  A gentle rain accompanied 8 unsinkable souls, including one first-timer, on this morning's walk -- for about the first 300 yards.  Then the rain gave up and the sun began to burn through the clouds.  We put our umbrellas away and enjoyed the rest of the hike with nothing between us and the partly cloudy sky.  We noted Coots and Buffleheads and Goldeneyes.  A flight of Canada geese took off in formation and did some Thunderbird-like maneuvers.  And a Great Egret was poised still as a statue ready to snap-up a small bit of breakfast.

• Wednesday, January 24, 2007, Astronomy Lecture @ Foothill College at 7:00 pm.  UCSC Astronomer Bruce Margon presented "Glimpsing the Edge of the Universe: Results from the Hubble Space Telescope", an illustrated, non-technical talk.  The Hubble Space Telescope has now circled the Earth 15 times a day for more than 16 years.  Dr. Margon discussed the latest discoveries and ideas from this amazing instrument.

• Saturday, January 20, 2007 the latest Age of Aquinas dance happened.  The nights may be getting shorter, but they were still long enough for about 40 people to dance the night away with the festive tunes of the Sharp Nines.  We warmed up a cold winter night with a repertoire of dance music that stirred our souls and got our feet moving.  This Winter Wonderdance was held at St. Albert the Great Community Center, 1095 Channing Ave, Palo Alto, 94301.  Doors opened at 7:30.  Dancing started around 8:30.  Snacks and beverages were provided.  Admission was still just $5.00. • Saturday, January 20, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  The air was crisp and cool.  The sun was bright and warm.  A baker's dozen set out heading toward the Palo Alto Baylands.  We saw several different varieties of birds: Canvasbacks and Coots, Cinnamon Teals and Shovelers, Avocets and Surf Scoters.  Over on the Baylands side we saw the (same?) Great Blue Heron we saw last week.  A fourteenth hiker caught up with us on the way back to the café, and 3 or 4 more joined us there.
  Tonight is the "Winter Wonderdance" and next Wednesday is the Astronomy lecture at Foothill College (See above).
  
  
• Saturday, January 13, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  The sky was a crystal clear blue.  The air was crisp and cold.  And the sun blazed bright and warm like the star in a brilliant star sapphire.  Eight of us set out in search of what one thought was Black-crowned Night Heron spied along the road.  We were soon joined by a ninth, but the heron turned out to be a Great Egret.  We turned around then and headed clear across the park to the Baylands where we spotted many familiar birds and the rarer Great Blue Heron.

  Three more joined us for coffee after the walk to bring our number to an even dozen.  Don't forget, we always hike, regardless of the weather, so will we see you next Saturday?
  
  
• Saturday, January 6, 2007 Hike at Shoreline:  Sometimes the hikes are long, like last week.  Sometimes they're short, like this week.  An even dozen of us, including 4 first-timers, started out along the lake, and coming back along the sloughs we picked up a hitchhiker.  Back at the café two more joined us for a grand total of 15.  The weather was beautiful and crisp and we identified a few birds we hadn't spotted before.  The most impressive were a red-tailed hawk and a belted kingfisher each perched high in their own trees.  We also spotted a pair of Anna's hummingbirds and many of the old standbys.
