Saturday, December 30, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: Your hike reporter is back after a holiday "road-hike" to Arizona. I understand that there were 7 or 8 hikers last week, and this week I can attest that there were an even dozen, with a 13th joining us for coffee at the café afterwards.

Saturday, December 16, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: It was a bonanza of new birds to be recognized and 12 people put their heads together to try and discern what we were seeing. The snowy egrets were all hunkered down, maybe due to the cold temps, and we thought they were a different, short-necked species. Then one of them raised his head to check us out, and gave himself away. Here are pictures of a few of the birds we hadn't seen before:

Saturday, December 9, 2006, 8:00 pm: The Sunnyvale Singers presented: Mozart and Mistletoe, a concert of holiday songs and great classics featuring Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Vesperae Solennes de Confessore", Benjamin Britten's "A Ceremony of Carols", and more. The concert was held at the Sunnyvale Community Theater, 550 E Remington Dr, Sunnyvale, CA. Saturday, December 9, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: There was a competition this morning between the blue and the grey, and neither side won. The grey clouds moved in for awhile, then the blue sky got the upper hand again. No raindrops fell on us during the hike but we felt a few toward the end of the coffee time. Several had their umbrellas with them, and that's powerful magic! We were a group of 11 at the beginning of the walk and one caught up with us and joined. Then we collected 3 more at coffee afterward. There is just no correlation between the chance of rain and the number of walkers/coffee-ers. It's fun no matter what. See you next Saturday?
Saturday, December 2, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: It was another beautiful day and a little chilly as we stood waiting for our number to grow this morning. And grow it did, to 10 and then 11 as we set out for our walk. Along the way we picked up a couple of hitchhikers, so then we were a baker's dozen. We walked a circuitous path which warmed us up nicely, and then we rendezvoused back at the café where eventually 3 more joined us. We had 2 first-timers and a couple of first-time-in-a-long-timers. The only possible use for an umbrella would have been to keep the sun out of one's eyes. No one wanted to do that, though, because the sun felt good. And next week it could be raining. But, as always, the hike must go on!
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 Transitions Special Guest Speaker at 7:30 PM in the Pastoral Center (3290 Middlefield Rd). This time we have a special guest! Sherry Cassedy is a long-time member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and has been a divorce lawyer for many years. She has produced a DVD on "Approaching Marital Dissolution" which is basically consumer education about what kinds of processes are available, the pros and cons of each, what to look for, how to work with a lawyer, etc. She will be speaking on The Divorce Ritual, and will answer questions afterwards.

Saturday, November 25, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: It was an incredibly beautiful morning at Shoreline this time, and, believe it or not, we had, three (count 'em -- THREE) bird charts! But we didn't see any birds we hadn't seen before. Those we did see, however, we all quickly identified. Spirits were high as 10 of us (we started out with 9 and picked up a hitch-hiker along the way) tramped along quipping and joking and disturbing all those birds with our laughter. Back at the "ranch" there were 3 more who joined us, and while we sipped our coffee or munched on breakfast, the laughter continued. It was a covey of comedians! So if you find yourself in need of a lifting of spirits, come next Saturday, and you'll float away on clouds of laughter. (But bring your umbrella, just in case it rains!)
Thursday, November 23, 2006 Age of Aquinas Thanksgiving Dining Out was held, and it was a huge success! Twelve people who otherwise would have been on their own for the holiday, gathered at David's Restaurant in Santa Clara. Saturday, November 18, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: The sky was pretty gloomy, but the people were lively. It was chilly waiting for everyone to arrive, but the sun was peaking through once we were on the paths. Ten people walked along the lake and over into the Baylands. Our resident bird-identifier was absent so we're not sure what we spotted! But 2 of us bought bird charts back at the café! There were 4 more who joined us at the café for coffee and breakfast. And there were handouts galore! See above for all the Upcoming Events. Oh, and the main reason it didn't rain on us was because of all the umbrellas we had handy. Join us next Saturday... and don't forget your umbrella!

Saturday, November 11, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: Well, it rained on some of us as we made our way to the rendezvous point, but there was no rain on the walk. There were several umbrellas, those anti-rain talismans, that kept the rain away. Six of us walked along the lake, taking our time, identifying birds. Then we crossed over into the Baylands and identified some more birds. We saw Willets, Cinnamon Teals, Western and Least Sandpipers, Marbled Godwits and Curlews, American Avocets with white necks, and many more. Two lucky walkers spied a pheasant out by the road on their way in.

Wednesday, November 8, 2006, Astronomy Lecture @ Foothill College. Astronomer Dale Cruikshank of NASA's Ames Research Center presented: The Planet Pluto: Maligned but Not Forgotten. Although Pluto is only one of many worlds beyond Neptune that are now recognized as dwarf planets, it is the one we know best. Mr. Cruikshank gave a non-technical, illustrated talk on this recently-demoted former planet.

Saturday, November 4, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: Eight of us walked out under grey bright and blue skies and curved all along the lake. At the boundary of the Baylands we split and some continued on around the lake, and the rest hiked along the shore of the sloughs. The lake was full of coots, the geese appeared to have gone. On the slough side there were pelicans galore. We rendezvoused back at the "ranch" where we joined up with 3 or 4 more who came for coffee. Whether you come to walk, or just sip a hot cup o' java, it's well worth it.
Saturday, October 28, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: Well, we broke the pattern this time and had blue skies for the second Saturday in a row. Fourteen of us headed off in the opposite direction we usually go, because there were reports of some burrowing owls along the easterly path.

We spotted the owls (no pun unintended) and spent some time at an information sign learning about them. Do you know they mate for life? Later we spied some American white pelicans. Do you know their beak can hold more than their bellican? Anyway, 2 more joined us for coffee back at the cafe and we all had a good time. You're welcome to join in next Saturday, rain or shine.
Saturday, October 21, 2006 was the latest Age of Aquinas dance, and it was a pumpkin smashing success! It was Halloween time and turned out to be a spooky evening filled with the groovy sounds of Sharp Nine, our favorite spinners of enchanting webs of musical ecstasy! People came in their scariest costumes and danced the night away! Doors opened at 7:30. The band started playing at 8:30. Snacks and beverages were provided. Saturday, October 21, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: Like I said, blue skies and grey ones alternate every other week. This time it was the blue skies' turn again. Ten people showed up to walk including another first-timer. We wove in and out on the paths and when we got to the boundary of the Baylands, we saw a species of bird we hadn't identified before.

Half the group then pressed on into the Baylands and the other half returned to join two more who were waiting for us at coffee. Eventually the whole dozen got together and enjoyed the sit-down part of these weekly Saturday hikes.

Sunday, October 15, 2006 there was going to be a Mini Star Party, but even though our resident astronomy buddy, Carrie, organized a gathering to try and spot the emerald green Comet SWAN, the weather didn't cooperate! The fog rolled in thick and just got thicker as sunset approached, so we had to cancel. That comet is out of range now, but we will try to schedule another star party soon.
Saturday, October 14, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: The blue sky and the grey ones alternate every other week. This time it was the clouds' turn. Nevertheless nine people showed up to walk including one first-timer. One pessimist thought the wildlife would all be hunkered down somewhere out of sight, but if some were, others were out and about. We identified several critters!

Saturday, October 7, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: In direct contrast to a week ago, Saturday's hike was under crystal clear baby blue skies, or would that be 'sky blue' skies? Anyway, the recent rains must have washed all the particulates out of the atmosphere. We only spotted one tiny cloud, lonely on the horizon. Yet in spite of the beautiful weather only 6 of us (3 of each gender) walked together. One more saw us pulling out, but by the time she got the car parked, we were gone. She did join us for coffee afterwards, though. Just to reiterate, we never cancel due to rain, so bring an umbrella if the skies look weepy. See you next Saturday, come rain or come shine!
Saturday, September 30, 2006: 6:30 pm was the planned Age of Aquinas Star Party. Well, the "Star" part of the Star Party was canceled by the astronomical society due to thick layers of fog and clouds rolling in. But the "Party" part wasn't! We regrouped and decided to caravan to Mitchell Park in Palo Alto for the picnic. There we enjoyed camaraderie and comestibles under the lights. And then, guess what! Saturday, September 30, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: It was chilly and cloudy, but 10 brave souls set out on a circuitous path that covered most of the "peninsula" part of the park, between the lake and the sloughs. And the path that connects to the Baylands was open, so we vetured across to see the swallow condos. Swallows have built their mud nests under of the eaves of the pumping station. Two or three more joined us afterward for coffee. We meet and walk every Saturday, regardless of temperature, sky condition, or precipitation state! Join us next Saturday.
Saturday, September 23, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: We had 20 all together this morning on the hike, 15 walked in a group. One joined on the path. And 3 or 4 walked another way. Then all but one (who had places to go, people to see) gathered for coffee at the the cafe. It was another perfect Bay Area morning and we enjoyed the sun and fresh air, and the coffee and camaraderie. See you next Saturday?
Saturday, September 16, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: It was another beautiful California morning and 10 set out walking. We kept an eye open for wildlife as usual and identified brown pelicans, a great egret, and of course the ever-present Canadian geese. Check out the website for some pictures taken by one of the hikers:

Part-way through our walk, a few us split off to take Shoreline's equivalent of I-280, the beautiful path through the trees, back to the cafe where one more was waiting for us sipping coffee. That made the total 11. Join us next Saturday for a pleasant walk, coffee, and camaraderie.

Saturday, September 9, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: There were 2 first-timers this morning, and 2 first-time-in-a-long-timers. I was busy remembering names and introducing everybody and forgot to count, but I think there were about 15 including the 2 who came for coffee afterwards. One of the neatest things about these hikes is the wildlife. Here are 2 we spotted this time:

Saturday, September 2, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: We had 11 hikers as we took off for a path less travelled this time. One path goes along the slough on the bay side. Another follows the shore of the lake. But there's a 3rd path that goes through the trees between those two. That's the route we took this time. The birdwatchers among us identified a pair of black-necked stilts wading in the slough.

Then back at the cafe later, 3 more joined us for coffee. It was a good morning to sleep in, as well as to go for a walk! We're on again next Saturday, so don't miss it.
Saturday, August 26, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: As I've noted before, something different happens every Saturday. This time 10 walkers took off together in the opposite direction that we usually take. We headed toward Michael's Restaurant first, cut through the golf course and came around the lake clockwise instead of the usual counter-clockwise. Half-way around we met another walker head-on who had arrived after we took off. (There was no collision... just a U-turn!) And back at the cafe, 3 more joined us for a grand total of 14. There's room for you next Saturday!
Saturday, August 26, 2006: 6:30 pm till about 10 pm. The "third ever" Age of Aquinas Star Party was a huge success. Before sunset, the sky was a clear, not-a-cloud-in-the-sky, blue. After sunset, more stars than have been seen around here in a long time came out. We could even see the Milky Way! We had two telescopes and a pair of high-power binoculars on a tripod pointing star-ward and viewed the Moon, Jupiter and its moons, various nebulae, star clusters, and some colorful double and single stars. Saturday, August 19, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: Every Saturday something different happens. This time 15 walkers took off together and all followed the same route. But we didn't stay in a tight group! Two forged ahead at a brisk pace, and two brought up the rear at a much more leisurely pace. Then there were a couple of independent groups of two and one who did their own thing. But all rendezvoused back at the cafe for coffee and camaraderie, including one who skipped the walk but wouldn't miss the talk. So we had 19 altogether. Not a record, but a goodly group. Make sure you're part of it next Saturday!
Friday, August 18, 2006 San Jose Giants Baseball with Age of Aquinas. It was a small group that showed for the "Little" Giants game last Friday night, but we had a blast! The food was great, the weather was perfect, and we had great seats (right behind Home Plate). But the real treat was the fact that our team won! Until the bottom of the 8th, the score was SJ Giants 2, Modesto Nuts 2. Then one of our guys stole home! on a wild pitch, making the score 3 to 2. The Nuts couldn't do anything in the top of the ninth -- 3 up and 3 down -- so the game was over and we won! The whole crowd was on its feet for the last 3 outs of the game, and the jubilation was not only deafening, it was palpable! We need to do this again!
Saturday, August 12, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: There are 4 classes of hikers: regulars, occassionals, first-timers, and... first-time-in-a-long-timers. We had some of each this time for a total 13. And then there are the join-us-for-coffee-timers, and we had 2 of those. Again, the clump of walkers split partway through the walk and about half walked longer than the other half (short-timers and long-timers?). Anyway, join us next Saturday and be one of the good-timers!
Saturday, August 5, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: At 8:55 am 2 hikers were waiting. At 9:10 there were 17! With the number stable at 17, including 4 first timers, we all set out. Not long after that our group had spread out, as usual, and different sub-groups took different paths. Then we all rendezvoused later at the cafe where 3 more joined us. So, if you've been counting, you know we had a record-setting 20 people! This is a fun gathering. 20 people can't be wrong!
Saturday, July 29, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: The weather has finally become more reasonable, and 15 people enjoyed it this past Saturday. 13 started out walking in a group, but by the time the hike was over, there were 3 groups because some stopped to identify birds, some took a different route, and the rest... well, we don't know where they wandered off to... But with the 2 who came later, all 15 got together for coffee in the end. We'll do it again this Saturday!
Saturday, July 29, 2006: 6 pm till 11 pm. Long, long ago in a glaxay far, far away, something happened. And last Saturday it happened again. We had six amateur star-gazers peeking through holes in the clouds at the 2nd ever Age of Aquinas Star Party last Saturday night. Even though the clouds tried, they didn't completely veil our view of the heavens. We saw the moon, Jupiter and his 4 major moons, several beautiful double stars, including Albireo whose 2 stars are a brilliant blue and gold! Plus other amateurs from the Peninsula Astronomical Society were there with their telescopes. We looked through others' scopes and others looked through ours, and even though the clouds moved in, we had a great time. So when's the next Age of Aquinas Star Party? Saturday, July 22, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: Sixteen people resisted melting in the hot sun last Saturday, counting the 3 who joined us for coffee/brunch around the shaded tables at the café after the walk. There's a cooling trend predicted for this next week, but it'll still be hot, so bring your wide-brimmed hat and sun block next Saturday for a nice walk in the park.
Saturday, July 15, 2006. Age of Aquinas presented A Midsummer Night's Dance with Sharp 9! It was an enchanted evening of blues, jazz, and rock brought to you by that eclectic mix of personalities, Sharp 9. It was the third time we've had this group play for us. They seem to enjoy us as much as we enjoy them! Doors opened at 7:30 pm. Sharp 9 began playing around 8:30. Snacks and beverages were provided. Saturday, July 15, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: We had 12 hikers last Saturday. All started out in one group, but varying paces spread us out quickly. One group took it slow and short and was back at the café in 30 minutes. The second group arrived about 15 minutes later. And the last group, the heartiest bunch, showed up 15 minutes after that. Then one more arrived to join in for coffee. That's the neat thing about these hikes. You can walk at your own pace for as long or as short as you like, or skip the walk altogether and just enjoy the camaraderie around the coffee table. See you next Saturday?

Saturday, July 1, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: It was another beautiful Northern California morning. Despite the crowds at the entrance to the park who were looking to get good seats for the concert, nine people made it to the staging area at the café. One, then, who is recovering from surgery stayed behind and waited for the adventurers to return. When they did, a tenth joined the group for coffee and breakfast. We're primed to gather again next Saturday, same time, same station. See you there!
Saturday, June 25, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: Four men and four women hiked on a beautiful, warm summer morning last Saturday. The paths that have been closed most of the spring are open now. We walked a circuitous route through tree tunnels and along the water. Three more joined us for coffee and an 11-way conversation. Will we see you next Saturday?
Saturday, June 17, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: The weather was warm and friendly and so were the people...all four of us! Yes, only 2 women and 2 men. There was another woman who arrived after we had taken off, or we would have had 5. And a 6th joined us for coffee at the café afterwards. Summer is here and these Saturday walks are a good way to keep those lazy, hazy, crazy pounds of summer from collecting, yes? See you next Saturday!

Saturday, June 3, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: We almost set a record last Saturday. Fourteen and a half people hit the trails on a stunningly beautiful morning. Where'd the "half" come in? Well, one of our number brought his son who escorted us on his Big Wheel for an hour. I think we were all more pooped than that little guy was! If you want something to do on a weekend morning that's rewarding to both body and spirit, join us next Saturday at 9!

Saturday, May 27, 2006 Hike at Shoreline: Ten of us followed the route taken last week by the adventurous scouts around the lake and golf course to the pro shop and Michael's Restaurant. We picked up an eleventh hiker on the way, and met up with two more back at Lakeside Café. So the final count was 13. For those who would be interested in a full healthy breakfast Michael's Restaurant is open on Saturday mornings. And for a light brunch or just coffee, Lakeside Café is excellent.

Saturday, May 20, 2006 Hike at Shoreline. Five of us gathered at Lakeside Café in Mountain View's Shoreline Park. The sky was bright and the air was calm with a high, thin overcast. The newly rebuilt walkway along the shore of the lake is open and we went that way toward the Baylands. Two adventurous souls went on around the golf course and lake and met the rest of us who turned around and retraced the way we came. Another joined us at the café for brunch.
Thursday, May 18, 2006 Special Guest Speaker at Transitions. Fifteen gathered at 7:30 PM at the Pastoral Center (3290 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto), for an evening with a special guest. Sister Rebecca Shinas is the Coordinator for Adult Spiritual Formation at St. Simon's Parish. She gave a talk on Transitions in Love and Life and led us in some singing as she accompanied on the guitar. Click on the link for more information.
Saturday, May 13, 2006 Hike at Shoreline. Well, we had to deal with the Human Race last Saturday... oh! yeah... we deal with the human race every day, don't we? But last Saturday was special! The 12th Annual Human Race benefit took place in Shoreline Park. See http://www.psastroke.org/humanrace2006.html for some information. We were delayed getting started but 7 + 1 of us walked. (One got held up by traffic and didn't catch up with us till the end.) Then 2 more joined us for coffee and breakfast at the café. So 10 altogether enjoyed the morning!
Saturday, April 29, 2006 Age of Aquinas Star Party. The first ever Age of Aquinas Star Party came off as planned! We rendezvoused at 8:00 pm at the big parking lot just outside the entrance to Shoreline Park in Mountain View. There were 7 at the Star Party that evening. We observed, through a 10-inch Dobsonian Reflector Telescope and binoculars, stars, planets, nebulae, star clusters, the Moon by Earthlight, and a few meteors! It was very pleasant.
